Papa's Pizza, Milford CT

Papa's Pizza has two locations in Milford CT.  The original location is on Naugatuck Avenue in the Devon section of Milford.  Papa's is a takeout only joint for the most part, but they do have some benches outdoors for nice weather.  Another way to enjoy Papa's Pizza is to pick some up on your way to the beach as it is right near Silver Sands and Walnut Beach.  Papa's Pizza serves up New Haven style pizza, and although there are probably a thousand places that do New Haven pies, there are not many places that do it right!
Small Mushroom:  A high quality pizza starts with high quality ingredients and Papa's cuts no corners here.  The crust is thin and crispy with some nice char and tastes more like a bread baked by a artisan baker. Continuing on from the crust is their homemade sauce with sweet stewed tomatoes and loads of garlic - there have been fights that have broken out over the slice with a large chunk of tomato that made its way on from the sauce.  As with the rest of the ingredients, the mushrooms and cheese are excellent.  Papa's probably has our favorite pie in CT right now. 10

Chicken "Cone" Grinder:  For starters, the cone grinder is not a regular sandwich.  This is actually half of a large loaf of Italian bread that's been hollowed out, stuffed with some nicely spiced grilled chicken, cheese, and their special sauce, then sealed with the core of the bread.  I would like to see the guy that orders this for lunch on a regular basis, because this sandwich, if you can call it that, is ridiculous.  Aside from it being a sight to behold, it's also pretty damn tasty. 7

If you live closer to Milford then you don't need to travel far to get one of the best New Haven style pies ever made.  Like a lot of local CT eateries you can get Foxon Park sodas here. Since this is a takeout place you don't need to worry about waiting in lines outside the door, but if you order on a busy night don't expect to be getting a pie in 20 minutes. If you don't live near Milford, pick a nice day and grab some pizza to enjoy at the beach - it's worth the drive!

Gaetano's Deli, Monroe CT

Geatano's has two locations: Geatano's Stratford and Monroe.  One location is just as good as the other and we love to visit them both.  For the most part they are a take out deli but we like to eat there. The Stratford location has a few outdoor tables when the weather is nice. The Monroe one has some indoor seating which is nice in the winter.  If you choose to dine in, they set you up with a plate with a side of macaroni or antipasta salad which are always excellent.

The store has a good selection of groceries to checkout while waiting for your food - imported meats, cheeses, pastas, etc.  But the reason we come here is always for the sandwiches.   There are a lot of good ones on the menu, but we always have to get at least one "Big Guy Combo" half of one is pictured below.

Big Guy Combo: To start, the base for a excellent sandwich is the bread - without a good roll nothing can bring a sandwich back.  Gaetano's delivers here with rolls and breads that are brought in daily from Bronx's Arthur Avenue.  The sandwich is then built up with a heaping pile of cured meats including ham, salami, mortadella, sopressata, and to finish - some nice stinky provolone.  We usually like ours topped off with lettuce, tomato, onion, hot peppers, oil and vinegar.  The result is one of the most obscene Italian sandwiches you will ever set your eyes and taste buds on.  This sandwich is Italian heaven.  10

If you live in Fairfield county, you have probably already been to Gaetano's. If you don't, then I have to say it's worth the drive.  So far, this place for us is unmatched as far as Italian Delis go - authentic, fresh and they have the seemingly rare ability to pull it all together and make some great sandwiches.

Huntington Street Cafe, Shelton CT

Located in the Huntington section of Shelton is a hip cafe where you can find noteworthy sandwiches like the steamed cheeseburger.  Here you order up your food at the counter and grab a seat in their cool casual lounge area.  The prices are reasonable and you can also get coffee, espressos, wine, and bottles of beer.
If you like music this is a great place to check out in the evenings.  The walls are decorated with records, guitars and speakers, but not all just for show - there is a small stage area where you can see some great rock, blues, jazz, and modern local bands in the evenings. Check their website for list of events: www.huntingtonstreetcafe.com
Since we got there late on a Saturday, we were unable to get any steamed cheeseburgers. We went with a "Don't You Want Me Baby?" pulled pork sandwich and a "Bella Luna" portobello sandwich.  All of their sandwiches are served up with a pickle and some fresh pasta salad which is excellent.
Don't You Want Me Baby?: I am a sucker for pulled pork, especially with some cheddar, onions, and cole slaw.  The pork is great and the hickory BBQ sauce is nice and tangy.  Their cole slaw adds a nice bit of a crunch.  It's even better with the crispy pickle and fresh pasta salad they serve with all their sandwiches.  9
Bella Luna: This portobello sandwich is no ordinary veggie sandwich. Gorgonzola, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto mayo come together for a perfect, punchy complement to the juicy, meaty portobello. 8.5

They have shortened hours during the winter, so check their website for the latest. We sure can't wait until it's season again for tunes, beers and delicious sandwiches.
